As Sonny and Jason are on their way out of the life, two current characters and their ‘Carly’ are on their way in. The mob has always been a big part of General Hospital, without it, hospital admissions would go way down. Sonny’s entire business is currently being threatened by Sidwell and the people of Port Charles, though I have a feeling the Corinthos name and its coffee will be around for years to come.
For many of us, we were there when Sonny, Jason and Carly began. We know about Sonny's backstory, Jason’s transformation from Quartermaine to Morgan, and Carly’s “search” for her birth mother that led to an unbreakable bond that would span decades. Sonny, Jason and Carly were alone in the world for different reasons, which played into the family they formed and the fierce loyalty they developed for one another. After years of trying to keep each other alive and out of jail, Carly has made strides to move on from Sonny’s world, and Sonny and Jason are actively seeking to extricate themselves from ‘the life’ all while a new trio is forming. This new trio already possesses that loyalty and happens to be family who share similar dynamics to the original three.
In a past article titled ‘The Future Is Female’ we examined which of Sonny’s kids could end up as his successor, highlighting that Michael already has his life with the Quartermaine’s and Dante has always been married to the law. Now that Michael is a father you can see him wrestle with his past, how he grew up, and it’s clear he wants to do better for his children and keep them out of the line of fire. While Dante may have the skills to run his father’s business, he doesn’t have the Corinthos name, and given our new theory, the Corinthos name might prove to be everything. Kristina, however, does bring the Corinthos name, and as for her second in command, we have Joss’ transformation from civilian to agent, not unlike Jason’s transformation that shifted his life trajectory, along with Michael – who knows the inner workings of the mob while not being directly involved. Like his mother did for Sonny and Jason all these years, Michael would do anything to protect his sisters.
In our most recent podcast episode titled “Tame and Restrain” we continued to speculate that Kristina will be Sonny’s successor, just with a different path to the throne. One of the important things Kristina brings to the table is the power associated with the Corinthos name – and what if that is all that’s required? Most fans would take one look at Kristina and would not see someone ready to take Sonny’s position, and they would be right. For a while, we thought we would gradually witness a transformation that would ready Kristina and lead her right into the mob. What we didn’t consider was that maybe Kristina doesn't need to be ready. What if all that is required to keep Port Charles and the Corinthos family safe is the Corinthos name, using Kristina to act like she has been bred for the role rather than just stumbling into it. Perhaps the reason Kristina, Joss and Michael get into ‘the life’ isn’t as gritty as Sonny’s but… funnier? Can you envision a mob storyline that is more ‘fake it until you make it’ rather than dark and ominous? I would love to watch these three scramble to play the part in an attempt to keep up with appearances to maintain the balance of power until they actually grow into their roles.
While Michael has years of experience being close to the mob, Joss has only just begun her Jason training. It’s no addict brother crashing a car leading to amnesia, but Dex ending up in Joss’ origin story is not nothing. It would be interesting to watch Carly experience what it was like for Monica all those years ago when she watched Jason’s future as a doctor be replaced by taking lives instead of saving them. Joss gave us the impression that she had turned down the volume on her hatred for Sonny, but as it turns out she’s hoping to take him down once she climbs high enough up the WSB ladder. The WSB serves as Joss’ Jason-ification and I think she is going to get more than she bargained for working with the WSB. Even though Joss killed Cyrus, she is pretty adamant that what Sonny does is wrong and what the WSB does is right. On our podcast ‘Tame and Restrain’ we wondered if her experience with the WSB will ultimately lead to her learning that the right thing can look an awful lot like the wrong thing at times, and that the lines between the WSB and Sonny’s world might not be so different, especially if protecting Port Charles and her family are at stake.
Years ago there was a scene of Kristina and Joss watching the Nurses’ Ball together right after Kristina was taken out of Dawn of Day and Joss lost Oscar. That scene highlighted the offscreen relationship we were unaware of, because their relationship was never a focus, and we have wanted more ever since. When Joss was at the fever pitch of her hatred for Sonny, you could see a future where Joss and Kristina carry on the Jax and Sonny vendetta, but I don’t think that will be the case. Joss referred to Kristina as her sister when she fell out of the window, but recently Joss told Vaughn that they are not as close anymore. That statement could be a fakeout, telling us how far apart Kristina and Joss are when soon enough they will be tied to one another and the mob for years to come.
In Monday’s episode when Kristina tells Michael about trying to kill Ava, it can be seen as a peek into the future. With Kristina leading him into her home to have a private conversation about illegal things her mother and sister can’t know about, the way Michael offers to help fix things, he even makes a comment about adding this to the pile of secrets Molly can’t know about. Kristina even said to Michael outright that Molly doesn’t know who she really is. Molly and Kristina might have recovered from the Adela/Irene storyline, but a life in the mob will not only amplify their differences, it will create a necessary and inevitable distance between them, something Dante is no stranger to. We would never want Molly and Kristina to find themselves as far apart as Ric and Sonny have, but being on opposite sides of the law is sure to keep things interesting.
It would be so entertaining watching the brotherhood between Sonny and Jason carried on by Kristina and Joss’ sisterhood. Again, such similar dynamics. With Michael added to the mix, you have the same love and loyalty that Carly had for Jason and Sonny. These girls are his sisters, and he will be there to stand by them in the same way Carly was for Sonny and Jason.
So back to the comedy and the formation of this Kristina and Joss partnership. It is hard to know how much time Joss’ whole secret spy life will hold up with Anna having figured things out, and the WSB’s connection to Britt, or more specifically, their search for the 5 Poppies. With Joss’ main goal to do good and balance the scales, she might have to dive into Sonny’s world to do just that in order to keep her family and Port Charles safe. Given how Joss views Sonny, she will have to find all of her shades of grey to see the nuance in Sonny’s choices, to understand that he’s not just one thing: evil. He might even be the one person she can really talk to about killing Cyrus. Stepping into Jason’s shoes will have Josslyn further understand a world she had previously spent so much time judging from the outside. As for Kristina, her name will go a long way in re-establishing power, as she gradually takes the time to wrap her head around her new life she never knew she wanted.
Over time Kristina and Josslyn will come into their own as Don and second in command, but before that happens, picture buddy cop vibes between these two as they fake it until they make it in a world they never thought they would find themselves in. If Diane thought she had her hands full before, wait until she becomes responsible for keeping these newbies out of jail. I think a comedic approach is the perfect twist and separation between these two eras of mob life on GH as we transition from one generation to the next, allowing Kristina and Josslyn to make their own distinct mark as one of the 5 families in Port Charles.

When I am not watching GH, posting about GH, or blogging about GH, I am often having fun creating and working on other projects. A recent project was creating a coloring book with my kids, including all the types of pictures they like to color. Together we created the Cutie Pie Coloring book, that isn't just a coloring book, but a world where you can create and name your characters to be added to our Cutie Pie Collection on instagram. Let’s be real, it’s a fun way to immortalise your child’s creation, making it easier when the images secretly make it off the fridge and into the recycling bin. You can check out the coloring book on Amazon USA or Canada and share it with anyone who loves to color and create. Visit our Cutie Pie Coloring Instagram page where you can submit your Cutie Pies and join our World’s Largest Cutie Pie Collection.
